Story
We are running the Nottingham half marathon to support a very special lady in her recovery from Guillain Barre Syndrome (GBS). Lizzie was about to complete her 3rd year of medical school when she became unwell. We're all missing her loads so our aim is to get her back on her feet so that she can return and finish her studies!
When Lizzie isn't moving, one would see wide eyes crowned with an unflappable brown bob. However, she is only visible to the naked eye in this state for a few short moments. The rest of the time, one would only see a shiny brown blur, flitting between bowls of sieved flour and folded dough, ovens crammed with perfectly rising cakes, and a Spotify playlist blaring 2001's most essential R&B hits.
Although Lizzie is known for her exceptional bakes and a deep love of gangster rap, she also has a fiery determination that has seen her through a Paris marathon, a master's degree from Oxford university, 4 months of studying abroad in relative isolation, and now a life-altering diagnosis. In the face of inconceivable adversity, she has shown and continues to show, extraordinary bravery - as only Lizzie could.
GBS is a rare autoimmune condition affecting the nervous system with devastating consequences. At its worst (as in Lizzies case), it leaves those affected only able to move their eyes and relying on a ventilator to breathe. You can find out more about the condition here: https://www.msdmanuals.com/en-gb/home/brain,-spinal-cord,-and-nerve-disorders/peripheral-nerve-disorders/guillain-barr%C3%A9-syndrome-gbs
Amazingly many people make a full recovery, but it is a long and painful road.
The photos only capture snapshots of what Lizzie has been through. But now the focus is on the continued efforts of physios, OTs and other specialists to enable Lizzie to make a full recovery.
We are hoping to raise enough money to cover any specific equipment or extra therapy sessions Lizzie may need, especially when she moves back home. Any money left over will be donated to the Guillain Barre charity 'GAIN', to support others in similar situations.
So give us 50 Cents (please) so we can get this girl back on the dancefloor A$AP Rocky.
