Oliver is suffering from brachycephalic obstructive airway syndrome. This condition is caused by breed related anatomic features (narrow nostrils, long soft palate) which restrict the normal flow of air through the upper respiratory tract. This can lead to a variety of secondary abnormalities which then exacerbate the obstructive disease (eg laryngeal collapse [progressive dysfunction of the voice box], regurgitation).

Oliver is regurgitating frequently and he has to take a course of medicine prior to surgery to minimise the risk of complications post-operatively (particularly aspiration pneumonia). Surgery consists of resection of the soft palate, resection of the nostrils. In addition, removal of the tonsils and saccules within the voice box.
