Weʼve raised £955 to help The Neuk, a 24/7 mental health charity in Perth

Funded on Tuesday, 12th July 2022

    Story

I will be doing a novice Triathlon and a bungee jump over the course of the next few weeks in order to raise money for The Neuk in Perth.

Mental health is generally a cause close to my heart. I have had a rocky year with my mental health – I’ve been fortunate enough to have had a great support network and ability to access help, many others do not. Post covid lockdowns etc, and mental health issues are through the roof, making this type of service more vital than ever.

The Neuk is a service that was set up last year to be there 24 hours a day seven days a week for people in crisis. The founder of the service Wendy Given had personal experience of losing someone to suicide, she also has loved ones who struggle with mental illness. Together with her Husband Derek they developed The Neuk to plug a massive gap in services with one aim; to save lives. As well as providing this service they are also trained to deliver a suicide intervention and prevention programme. Here is a link that takes you to this training, everyone is welcome on this so please book a place https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/suicide-intervention-prevention-programme-tickets-265089268137.

Wendy who runs the charity said - your support via your donation to Scott, is invaluable to us, as a registered charity we run our service on donations and funding from The National Lottery. We like to ensure that everyone can access our service and your funds will assist us to offer resources to people that use our service. An example would be a weighted blanket for someone who cannot sleep due to distress, earphones for someone to listen to music as a distraction and coping mechanism instead of self harm. All money stays local and 100% goes into the direct service delivery.

Now, those of you that know me, will know that 1) I am not built for a triathlon (novice or otherwise) and 2) I have an absolute fear of doing a bungee jump - I have tried to avoid getting involved with a bungee jump often over the years !

So if I am putting myself through the training and the actual triathlon itself and then throwing myself off a bridge ! (I mean WHY?) Then hopefully you guys can spare a few pounds which will go direct to The Neuk to make it all worthwhile!

A 6th place (of the 18 novices !) finish & beat my target time by a solid 5 minutes! Literally the fastest I think I had done every discipline - I’ll say again - Adrenalin ! Very pleased. Thank you so much to everyone! A special mention for my wee pal Judah coming to cheer me across the finish line! A two week break, where the fundraising page will remain open & then part two ..... the dreaded bungee jump

The cycle - which was the bit I was dreading the most - was actually fairly enjoyable. It’s probably worth saying that I think adrenaline had a massive part to play in this. Got up that brutal hill at the start then left turn and had fun! Into T2 and then onto the run. The run was still decent although I did get a stitch halfway through which wasn’t part of the plan but all good and across the line! https://www.racetecresults.com/results.aspx?CId=40&RId=5335&EId=2

Part one of this double fundraising challenge is complete ! I have to admit driving through this morning and I was nervous as hell! A wee wander past the finish line and watching all the fast guys going through their transitions and seeing where my zone was settled me down just fine! The race itself was surprisingly good fun! I guess the training paid off well in the end ! The swim was good (although the less said about the bright pink swimming cap the better!), then out and into transition which involved no calamities I’m pleased to report
