Story
Our Parish
St Fursey's Church is an Orthodox Christian community in Stalham, Norfolk, serving the beautiful Norfolk Broads area of England. It is our mission to expand the knowledge and practice of the Orthodox Christian faith in England, and to reconnect Britain with it's ancient Christian heritage. To that end, we are in the process of building a brand-new Church which will be a beacon for the Ancient Faith in these lands. We humbly ask for your support to help us complete the remaining work this year, before the winter sets in.
Our Priest
Fr Stephen Weston is a convert to Orthodoxy with a passion for Britain's saints. Indeed, our parish's patron saint, St Fursey, lived only 20 miles from our village and established his monastery in the nearby ruins of a Roman fortress in the 600s (Burgh Castle). He endeavoured to bring Christianity to the pagan Anglo-Saxon people in this part of England, and his profound Christ-like life and example earned him a place in the Venerable Bede's 'Ecclesiastical History'. We ask for St Fursey's help to bring the light of Christ to those in our community in the 21st century. Father Stephen's missionary work includes an Orthodox stall at local markets, regular inquirer's evenings, quiet days & retreats, and weekly Bible studies. All of this hard work has borne a great deal of fruit with a parish composed of new converts to the ancient Christian faith.
A New Chapel
As our parish has grown, the need for new, purpose-built premises to accommodate the community has become pressing. In 2017, we were able to purchase an old police station in our village and began converting it for Orthodox worship. The current premises consist of two meeting rooms, a kitchen, toilets and baby changing facilities, and we have been granted planning permission to build a dedicated chapel as an extension. The chapel will be based on the layout of the earliest known house church discovered in Britain, completed in Byzantine-style.
All funds raised through this appeal will go towards the chapel's completion and will secure a legacy of providing a place of worship in this area of England for generations to come. Thank you for your help and may God bless you for your generosity!
