    Story

Every year, around 8 million tons of plastic enter the world's oceans. Most of this is from rubbish dropped on land which is then blown into waterways that sweep it out to sea. The plastic is caught in the ocean's currents and ends up in one of five giant marine rubbish patches. The largest of these is the Great Pacific Garbage Patch, located off the coast of California and estimated to be two or three times the size of Texas. One million sea birds and 100,000 marine mammals are killed each year because of plastic in the oceans. Over the last ten years, more plastic has been produced and thrown away than in the whole of the last century, and every piece of plastic ever made still exists in some form. Boyan Slat, a young inventor from Holland, has developed advanced technology to try and clean up the Great Pacific Garbage Patch by 2030. He is the youngest ever recipient of the UN's highest environmental accolade 'Champion of the Earth.' The Ocean Cleanup is expensive and relies on crowdfunding to keep it going. I am going to spend a month attempting to go plastic -free to raise money to help.

Now that the brilliant Sally Nicholls has joined in and galvanised people (unlike me, who just depresses the shit out of everyone), we are well in our way to raising our first £100 for the Ocean Clean-up.

Now that the brilliant Sally Nicholls has got involved and galvanised people more effectively than me (because I just depress the shit out of everyone), we almost have our first £100.

I have recently read a lot about the impact humans are having on the planet. It is a fact that we will be leaving our children to deal with environmental catastrophe, and I want mine to know that I did all I could to try and protect them from it.
