    Story

UPDATE: An online memorial event to celebrate Sarah will take place on Thursday 8 July 2021 at 7.30 pm, to which you are all invited. There will be readings from some of Sarah's favourite authors and actors. Register here to watch: Memorial Registration

The journalist Sarah Hughes died from cancer on Monday 5 April at the age of 48. She was deeply loved by her husband Kris, children Ruby and Oisín, parents Sean and Felicity, siblings Emily and John, and by her wider family and friends.

Following the announcement of her death (as reported in the Guardian) , there was a huge outpouring of tributes online to Sarah, which made it clear how greatly respected and loved she was for her writing, with her work ranging from hard hitting and acclaimed overseas reportage, to the television and entertainment journalism that was her later specialisation. She worked throughout her illness, with her final Line of Duty recap published the day before she died (Sarah's final recap for Line of Duty series 6, episode 3). Some of her most moving and powerful recent pieces were those published in The Observer about her life, about living with cancer during the pandemic, and of how much her family meant to her ('Finding a part of each day to relish': coping with cancer and Covid).

We her family and friends wish to raise funds to set up a Trust in Sarah's memory, the Sarah Hughes Trust. Its aims will be to establish an Annual Lecture in Sarah's name to be given at the History of Medicine Society at the Royal Society of Medicine, to raise funds for the furtherance of education and research in the humanities and the history of medicine, and to provide support for aspiring journalists from less privileged backgrounds.

We would be very grateful for any donation that you might be able to give. It's so cruel that Sarah has been taken from us all at such a young age; aside from the loss to her family and friends, she had so much more work still to write, so many more words left unspoken. We want to keep her name alive, and we need your help. Thank you.
