    Story

Our beloved cat Alfie has been part of our family for the last 10 years since he was rescued from an animal shelter as an orphaned kitten. He's moody, often grumpy, but is also very loving and is a huge part of our life. He's moved all over the country with us, making friends with neighbours wherever we go and partaking in the odd bit of fancy dress for the annual Christmas card!

Early September Alfie developed an ulcer in his right eye following a deep scratch from a neighbouring cat. The local vets tried everything they could over the subsequent months but his eye didn't respond to treatment and a sequestrum mass formed over his eye. Alfie was then referred to the Royal Veterinary College for further investigation.

We were faced with the decision of costly eye surgery where the sequestrum would be removed and a corneal graft completed, removal of the eye which was estimated to be as much as the eye surgery or getting him put down :-( Although we have pet insurance none of the treatment for his eye is covered as he has had a previous ulcer on that eye so it is classed as a 'pre-existing condition' where no money can be claimed.

We chose to give Alfie the best chance of a full recovery and he was rushed in for emergency surgery last week. The sequestrum mass was cut away from his lens and a conjunctival pedicle graft completed. He spent the first 5 days of recovery feeling very sorry for himself with a cone on his head, but is now healing well. After his first check up the graft is beginning to secure itself and he has his eye open after approximately 3 months of it being closed. He has a long way to go but by the New Year he will be allowed back outside and be fighting fit.

As we have no savings, a young family and a new business we have been forced to borrow money to give Alfie the treatment he deserves. We just couldn't face getting him put down. We have spent in excess of £1000 in vets bills and the eye surgery and after care is invoiced at £1700. This is a huge expense we are really struggling with, especially in the run up to Christmas.

Any help would be much appreciated as Alfie will need more care in the future before he's fully healed and we need to find a way to put money aside for this.

Thank you for reading and for any help towards getting Alfie back to his best.
