Story
Back in early 2017 we successfully obtained a licence to create The Reginald J Mitchell Memorial Garden on a privately owned plot of land which had become derelict and an eyesore in the local community.
Our aim was to honour and remember Kidsgrove's most famous son by creating a community garden in his name for all to enjoy. The R J Mitchell Memorial Garden is only a matter of yards from his birthplace on Congleton Road, Butt Lane in Kidsgrove, Staffordshire.
Reginald J Mitchell was an English aeronautical engineer. He is best remembered for his creation of the iconic Second World War fighter plane, the Supermarine Spitfire.
Following sale of the land by the private owners in late 2017, the community's efforts to honour Reginald J Mitchell and create a community garden for all to enjoy are now at risk.
The plot of land is up for auction in a few weeks time and local councillors and businesses are keen to save the R J Mitchell Memorial Garden for generations to come.
Please donate what you can and share this page far and wide to help us reach our target of £16,500.
By working together we can finish the project we started to remember a true hero!
--
Please note: The target of £16,500 will hopefully allow us to purchase the plot of land, which is up for auction at £15,000 and pay for the associated legal and administrative fees. If we are unsuccessful in our bid at auction, we will use the raised funds to invest in community projects in the Butt Lane & Talke area, which will be publicised and credit given to those who have donated.
If we are successful in our bid at auction, we intend to establish a trust to maintain the R J Mitchell Memorial Garden - the ownership of the land will reside with the trust for the benefit of the local community.

6 years agoThank you to everyone who donated to this project. A local business has bought the site which contains the Reginald Mitchell Memorial Garden. The good news is that a new agreement is now in place with the new owner and the future of the garden is secured for the public. We raised £120.00 and as per the conditions all the funds will be spent on the garden to improve it and add extra flora and fauna for the enjoyment of everyone in the community. Look out for the mural of the Spitfire - installation soon... Once again, thank you.
