Unfortunately for us at the end of 2016 The Steel Shed was delisted without public consultation by Historic Environment Scotland making it vulnerable to removal and demolition. We are sad to say this is happening to make way for a development, so DOK needs to raise funds to rebuild.DOK is a non-profit artist led project that offers affordable studio and exhibition space to Scottish based artists. At DOK we also run a funded program working with local high schools and youth groups offering them free workspace, materials and mentoring sessions which enables them to apply for further education and pursue a career in the creative industries. Another core aspiration is enabling the wider community to engage with DOK projects, as well as giving people the opportunity to buy artwork directly from artists at reduced cost. This process will be beneficial to the artists, allowing them to continue developing ideas and projects that will engage with the community. The next stage in the DOK story is to build purpose built studios with exhibition space along from where we are situated now as we have been allocated some land. These studios will be built using shipping containers, we currently have one 40ft but the build requires 2 x 40ft and 3 x 20ft. This is what we need funds for, as previously mentioned we are artist led and non-profit with all monies raised to date going straight back into the project. As the shed is being dismantled to make way for what will be a purpose built Whisky Distillery we are delighted to be offered the use of parts of the shed within our build to retain some of the history of where DOK began as well as some of the history of Leiths shipyard and industry that came many years before us. Any funds raised will go towards incorporating this. We would appreciate any help that you can give.
