My beautiful granddaughter esmai rose was born on the 23/10/2017 born full term at 40 weeks and 3 days . The morning before her birth my daughter didn't feel her move much and was losing green and brown discharge. We went to the hospital the heart rate of baby was very high so drs decided to perform an emergency c section. My daughter was rushed to a theatre and they attempted an epidural but after 6 attempts it did not work so was put under General anaesthetic.
Baby esmai was born alive covered in meconium she had a heart rate but no respiratory effort so resuscitation was started. At 12 minutes old she went into seizure and drs struggled to control it she was put on a ventilator and was heavily sedated and transferred to the nicu at poole hospital. My daughter didnt get to see her for 6 hours and then could only touch her .
On Tuesday 24th october she was transferred as an emergency for more specialized treatment with an intensive care team to southampton nicu unit. An mri and lots of tests were preformed on the friday we were given the devastating news that she had extensive brain damage and specifically to the part of the brain that controlled her breathing, the professor of neonatal neurology told us that she had to breathe on her own and if she could do that she would stand a chance of life but would be suffer significant mental and physical disabilities. If she couldn't come of ventilator then we would have to talk about what was best for esmai we knew what that meant and as you can imagine we were totally distraught .within 48hrs she was breathing herself, crying , moving swallowing acting like a Newborn baby we were shocked but happy another mri was done.
The results were shocking her brain damage was worse the pons in her brain has almost disappeared , chunk of white matter disappeared and her basal ganglia is shrinking they have no diagnosis and no treatment shes been given 6 months to 2 years to live drs are baffled and we need to find help
