    Story

As a mutual organisation, Skipton recognise the importance of supporting the community. We've supported numerous good causes throughout the country, not only through financial donations, but also with fundraising.

This brings us to our next venture... 7 'willing' volunteers from the newly formed SBS Cycling Club will be cycling 250 miles from Skipton Building Society head office, to Edinburgh Branch, stopping off at a few branches along the way. We're setting off on Thursday 28th and landing in Edinburgh on Saturday 30th September.

We're raising money for 3 fantastic charities - The Silver Line, The Movember Foundation & Wil's Wishes.

The Silver Line - The Silver Line operates the only confidential, free helpline for older people across the UK that’s open 24 hours a day, seven days a week. They also offer telephone and letter friendship schemes where they match volunteers with older people based on their interests; facilitated group calls; and help to connect people with local services in their area. Their specially trained helpline team: Offer information, friendship and advice, Link callers to local groups and services, Offer regular friendship calls and Protect/Support older people who are suffering abuse and neglect.

Wil's Wishes - Wil's Wishes has been set up by his family following the passing of Wil to bowel cancer at age 24. The family would like to raise awareness of this dreadful disease which sadly can affect any age group together with raising funds. It aims to help those affected by terminal illness, they are often vital things families require or 'wishes' to help them through this devastating time and Wil’s Wishes would like to be in a position to support these families. They also assist financially with the education and development needs of under-privileged pupils through local schools.

The Movember Foundation - Our family and friends face a health crisis that isn’t talked about. Men are dying too young. We’re the only charity tackling men’s health on a global scale. We address some of the biggest health issues faced by men: prostate cancer, testicular cancer, mental health and suicide prevention. We know what works for men, and how to find and fund the most innovative research to have a global and local impact. We challenge the status quo and invest quicker in what works. In 13 years we’ve funded more than 1,200 men’s health projects around the world.

The lads have hit Ripon and Bedale so far! They're enjoying the lovely scenery and have even had a donation from an SBS customer :D Lynne the branch manager at Ripon sent an update 'I have had a lovely group of men in Lycra visit the Branch!! We did a spread of drinks, flapjacks, sweets and jelly babies, toilet facilities and even a coffee for the driver (!!) and sent them on their way to Bedale – we even had some customers in who were very excited to see men in shorts!! Such a fun way to spend a Thursday morning!!'

Tomorrow we set off on our crazy adventure, follow our twitter page for updates throughout the ride @SBSCyclingClub - but the most important thing to remember is the three charities benefitting from this. The Movember Foundation, The Silver Line and Wil's Wishes. Take a look at their websites (Links above) and if you can, donate any spare cash to these three great causes.
