Each year youth organisations from all over the globe come to the UNFCCC Climate Change negotiations to platform youth voices on the international stage. Youth organisations are continually pushing for more ambitious climate targets and fairer policies. Attending the event is easier for some countries than others. For organisations from the Global South, funding can be harder to secure and this takes months of budgeting, fundraising, planning and preparations.

This year COP25 was supposed to take place in Santiago, Chile, the first to take place in the Global South since 2014. This is a great location as it was more accessible to Global South countries which gave them more capacity to get involved and raise important environmental issues in the region, such as the recent major oil spill and decimation of the Amazon.

However, COP25 was cancelled last minute by President Piñera due to upset caused by his neoliberalist regime. Now the COP has been relocated to Madrid on the exact same dates, meaning that Youth organisations have to find thousands of Euros to buy flights and accommodation in a much more expensive city, in a matter of weeks. Most won't be able to go, and almost all will be taking a smaller delegation. This gives them a quieter voice during the negotiations and allows leaders to carry out negotiations with less pressure and engagement from civil society. This is the last thing we need during a climate crisis.
