I am really excited to be given this opportunity to join Camps International in summer 2020 on a 4-week expedition to Borneo, the world’s third-largest island, to live and work as part of the community helping local people improve their living standards and supporting various conservation efforts.

While we are there we will be camping in Batu Puteh, the heart of one of Borneo’s most ancient forests, living alongside elephants and orangutans. We will be collecting seeds, helping to tackle deforestation by planting trees, and monitoring wildlife by boat along the Kinabatangan river. We
will also be staying in Bongkud village where the population of young children in the village is growing fast and the kindergarten is overcrowded so we’ll be helping with activities like digging classroom foundations & laying bricks, plastering, painting and decorating buildings, making classroom furniture, creating a play area & landscaping and installing water storage tanks & piping. We will also be digging trenches for water pipes and laying foundations for water tanks In Tinangol where there is no mains controlled water and constructing a play area for their kindergarten as well complete with fishpond. Part of the expedition is a 4-5 day trek through the jungle sleeping in hammocks and, as a lifelong fan of Bear Grylls, I am really looking forward to learning essential jungle first aid and survival techniques!

I need to raise £4,230 to be a part of this trip and I am personally donating my part-time income between now and May 2020. I am also planning a Borneo-themed fundraising party with Indonesian food and music, sponsored beach cleaning for summer 2019, going giftless for birthdays and Christmas, busking on my saxophone and bake sales.

This is a once in a lifetime opportunity for me to be part of a really truly worthwhile expedition and an experience that will be hard to beat!
