    Story

Thank you to everyone who has supported Shakila’s life fund. We would like to give you an update on her situation and the progress that she has made.

Shakila arrived in New Delhi, India in December 2013, and received life-saving medical treatment the Apollo Hospital, thanks to the generous support of the Indian Government and Former President Hamid Karzai.

Shakila underwent 8 surgeries that have stabilized her condition and given her a chance at leading a more normal life. Given all that she has endured and the danger she continues to face in Afghanistan, She and her mother were granted asylum in India and are currently living under refugee status.
The Indian government generously covered the costs of Shakila’s procedures for over a year, however, as of February 2015 she is no longer receiving financial support from the government. Shakila’s injuries require long-term treatment. We would like to continue our fundraising efforts so that we may cover this financial gap and afford

In 2016 Shakila’s asylum case was approved by UNHCR to resettle in the United States.
In preparation for her transition to the US, Shakila has been receiving private tutoring lessons to improve her English and acquire knowledge of various subjects to prepare her for more advanced studies once she begins to attend school in the United States.

Despite the adversity she has faced, Shakila still has an insatiable desire to learn and improve herself even if it means starting over. Her spirit is stronger than the bullets which altered the course of her life, and with your support she will continue to overcome the emotional and physical pain she had endured so that she may serve as an advocate to break the perpetual cycle of domestic violence that has claimed so many women.
