Story

My family are from the Sylhet district in Bangladesh. Whilst there has been economic growth in that area in recent years, having a standard of living and prosperity are only limited to those who have the financial means and strong family support. Unfortunately, this leaves the poor and the less privileged in a terrible vicious cycle of poverty, ill health, malnutrition, poor education and the inability to afford even the basic of essentials. There are lots of children in Sylhet who are in a state of destitute driven by poverty, not having anyone to care for them and ending up on the streets or, if lucky, in an orphanage. Not having a decent welfare system to take care of the needs of these children makes the situation even worse and what government provisions exists is riddled with red-tape, mismanagement and corruption. These children’s survival entirely depends on the generosity and kindness of people and charitable donations. Every time I travel to Bangladesh, I see the suffering of babies and young children who are walking about on the streets naked, with no food, no access to clean water, and no one taking care of their health and welfare. This is extremely difficult to mentally process and accept as the reality given how wealthy some people and some parts of the world are and yet these children are struggling to get even the very basic of their human needs met.

I have made an ambition to run the Leicester half marathon this year – I have not done or even attempted anything like this before in my life. I have also made a plan, a pledge and a resolution that I want to use this event to raise some money for the poor and destitute children in Sylhet and I want to continue this as a rolling humanitarian programme. Just £120 will pay for 1 year complete upkeep for a child in an orphanage. My request to you, please help and support me to make this a success. Anything you can afford, is welcome and gratefully received. Please encourage your friends and family to donate as well. May God bless you in health and wealth, and grant you happiness, success and prosperity- Ameen.

I am 41 years old, I have little children of my own. I have seen lots of poverty and how children suffer, having my own children makes me realise and appreciate even more the needs of others. Seeing children suffer makes me really sad- we can all do something to help.
