Story
Hi everyone. This is a just giving page set up for our friend and colleague Simon "Couchy" Couchman.
Back in April, Simon, a rugby loving family man who has worked on the railway all his adult life, was rushed to hospital with a cyst on the brain. No warning, boom, his life and that of his family changed forever.
The prognosis was not good. The doctors operated straight away, the first of five operations he has had since being admitted. This first operation basically saved his life, but unfortunately the build up of pressure on the brain resulted in Simon losing his sight, his memory, and the ability to communicate.
When the doctors felt it was safe to do so they removed the cyst, but such was the damage caused that a permanent shunt has had to be implanted to release fluid from his brain. He will have this shunt for the rest of his life.
All this happened just a few weeks before his wife's 40th birthday, a birthday that Simon has not yet been able to celebrate.
He has no short term memory, just vague recollections of his life on the railway and the people he knows. He can't hold a normal conversation but does respond to you when prompted
He's now had all the operations he is going to have, five in total, and is recovering in West Park Hospital. No one knows how much he will recover and how much of a normal life he will be able to lead, but wit with hard work and the love of his friends and family as well as your support we hope to have Our Simon back with us.
Leon Summerfield: I'll be running Wolves half marathon on September 4th
