Story
Nick & Lise are no strangers to physical challenges and decided to take on the Atlantic Coast Challenge, running 3 marathons in 3 days from Padstow to Land's End, to help this worthy cause. Nick has been running marathons for the last 16 years and completed the Two Oceans ultra marathon in Cape Town last Easter. Lise has run marathons, competed in Iron Man events and has cycled vast distances, most notably Land's End to John O'Groats and most recently in the Pyrenees. This joint venture takes place between 7 - 9 October, 2016.
The Community Holiday is a residential holiday for 20 children with a range of special needs aged between 10 and 18. It takes place one week in August each year and is based at St John’s School, Leatherhead, Surrey. The holiday is first and foremost an opportunity for young people to enjoy themselves, spend time with existing friends and make new ones. The children experience a wide variety of activities, including swimming, climbing and kayaking or canoeing. They also participate in visits to the theatre in the West End, the Sussex seaside and a local theme park. The holiday has existed each summer since 2014 and the feedback from the children’s parents has been very positive, such that the overwhelming majority of children have returned the following year.
Beyond giving the children an enjoyable holiday, another core purpose is to provide parents with respite care for one week of their summer. This is an unseen element but one that parents appreciate. The third purpose of the holiday is to provide young people with opportunities to take responsibility for the children, caring for them by working one-to-one with them during the week. More than 20 sixth form and ex-sixth form pupils from St John’s School care for the children and the evidence demonstrates that this is a challenging and rewarding role that can be life-changing, as older teenagers take on responsibility for others, often for the first time in their lives.
