Story
Shitima School is located on the outskirts of Kabwe and serves many of the smallest and most at-risk residents of Makalulu, the nearby slum and the second largest shantytown in sub-Saharan Africa. This school provides education, housing and a strong, supportive environment to orphans, former street kids and other children who would otherwise be living in terrible poverty and deep deprivation.
I visited Shitima School in summer 2015 and after seeing the incredible work the school do and the impact they have on the many children's lives who live, or attend the school, I have decided to go back at the end of January 2017 for 2 months. I am going to be helping out in a variety of ways, such as helping to teach ICT: One of many ways in which the school help the students become prepared to find jobs once they finish at school and so able to live secure, happy and healthy lives.
When I visited the school in 2015 the students were mainly asking if I could help them get two things: socks and footballs.
Pairs of socks may seem a basic item here in the U.K., so much so we often don't think about their importance or how it would be to live without them. Zambia gets pretty cold in the winter months. Living without socks, or with socks with holes in, can lead to discomfort or frostbite in the cold winter months, bacterial and/or fungal infections and blisters. New pairs of cotton socks can prevent multiple problems and are inexpensive to provide.
Football is a huge part of Zambian culture, and it is most of the boys' favourite past time. It is a great escape from classroom life, which however vital to their futures, can become a bit mundane. There are often no balls available to play with, or the boys are forced to play with makeshift balls. Being able to take footballs to the school would help provide the students with a lot of fun for the foreseeable future.
Any donation, no matter how small, will help bring students at Shitima more comfort & enjoyment.
