Hi my name is Sophie Brown, for those of you that don't know me I am studying a Level 3 Diploma in Sports Science at Derby College. I will be volunteering in Kenya on January 13th 2018.

Eight years ago Derby College began a project in partnership with Derby County Football club to go out to Kenya and improve the lives of children, many of whom come from extremely deprived backgrounds and communities. The aim of this project is to support the local community and to build school buildings which allow children access to education.

On this trip, I along with other volunteers, will help to build dormitories which will allow children to stay over near school during the week, instead of walking miles each day to and from school. By doing this we ensure that the children have a safe and secure place to stay, providing them with the essentials, as well as saving them that huge journey. On the trip, we will interact with the children daily giving them basic lessons in English, Maths and Sport as well as learning about their cultures and daily routines.

Our visit to Kenya will also involve visiting the children in their own homes, meeting their families and handing out donations of food, clothing and toys. The £2000 I intend to raise will fund my trip to Kenya and allow me to participate in the project. With the overall goal being to enhance the future prospects of the children and leave them with a school that will serve the local community for years to come. Any additional funds raised will go towards buying extra building and decorating materials.
