Story
I have decided to sign up the London Vitality 10,000 race which is on the 28th Of May this year. I'm going to raise money for The Special Care Baby Unit at Hinchingbrooke Hospital, as this wonderful unit provided outstanding care and support for my baby nephew, Arthur when he was born on the 30th of June 2017.
Arthur spent the first three days of his life in the Special Care Baby Unit after he had Strep B and needed the extra care after birth. The care and love they show is amazing, they weren't just providing care for Arthur, they provided support and advice to my sister and her partner being first time parents. Once moved on the ward with his mum, the nurses had to go back twice a day for Arthur's antibiotic's. With them being there, they were quick enough to detect what was wrong with Arthur and get him themedicine he needed quickly.
The unit consists of 10 cots, including one for babies requiring intensive care, one for babies needing high dependency care and up to 8 special care cots. The unit is staffed by doctors and nurses with specialist skills and experience in looking after premature and sick babies. There are many different reasons for a baby to be admitted to the Special Care Baby Unit. Your baby may have been born earlier than expected or may need extra monitoring following birth. Babies admitted to the unit may need help with their breathing, feeding, temperature control and weight gain and may need close observation and monitoring.
Money raised goes to providing the essentials for both babies and parents.
As many people know, I enjoy running! In October 2017, I joined a local running club to become more consistent, fitter and stronger. I set my own personal targets to run 500 miles this year, run as many 10 kilometre runs and maybe a half marathon distance. To challenge myself for this race, I am setting a target to complete this run in under 55 minutes. My current time is 60 minutes.
In May 2014, I completed this same run for Bowel Cancer UK Charity for my Nan who was diagnosed with bowel cancer. I raised £800 for the charity and it felt amazing! My nan was there at the finish line cheering me on. The last minutes of the race will stay with me forever, it was a very emotional and over whelming experience. Unfortunately my Nan passed away in April 2015, but I know she will be with me during this race, alongside my family and Arthur cheering me on for such an amazing cause!
