Weʼve raised £500 to help fund a youth-production of the musical Spring Awakening

Funded on Monday, 30th April 2018

    Story

Spring Awakening is an angsty, rock musical adaptation of the seminal play about the trials and tribulations of growing up.'The winner of 8 Tony Awards, including Best Musical - told by Duncan Sheik and Steven Sater through "the most gorgeous Broadway score this decade" - Spring Awakening explores the journey from adolescence to adulthood with poignancy and passion that is illuminating and unforgettable. The landmark musical is an electrifying fusion of morality, sexuality and rock & roll that is exhilarating audiences across the nation like no other musical in years.'

We want to create an entirely youth-produced production of Spring Awakening. Everything from the acting to the direction, the choreography to the lighting desgin, everything will be done by 16-19 year olds (apart from the two adults in the show). In short, this show is an opportunity for young people do so something they usually wouldn't be able to do, and to give something back to the theatre community they grew up in.

We are a group of 16-19 year olds who love theatre. We grew up on a small island, Jersey (in the UK), where the theatre community is surprisingly thriving for a small island like ours. Opportunities were never too far away, and if they were, we always had school shows to take part in. However, as we grew up, we noticed that, aside from acting, all the other things that go into a show tended to be left to the grown ups. We also noticed that, in a youth group putting on a show, the age range tended to be under 14s, and 14-16/18. Because of the age ranges, groups aimed at teenagers would often have to stick to show that were for younger teens - in other words, family friendly content - although this wasn't always the case with drama and straight acting, this was almost always the case with musical theatre. Speaking of musicals, we came to realize that, actually, there weren't as many opportunities for older teens to do musicals as there were to do plays. It seemed like musicals were either for under 14s, or adults. There was nothing for us. As much as I love Joseph and the Amazing Technicolour Dream Coat, there's not much you can really sink your teeth into as an actor. There aren't any mature themes to deal with, no difficult music to wrap your head around and rock out too (although the songs in Joseph are a bop from start to finish, just saying.)

So we decided to make our own opportunity.

The problem is, we're teenagers in full time education, so we can't fund this on our own. We want to not only create an opportunity to do a production where teenagers could do everything, but also allow them to do something mature, uncensored and meaty, and we think Spring Awakening is the perfect show for this. We also want to give something back to the community we grew up in, and got so many opportunities from before a lot of us head off to the mainland to go to university in September. We want to make this production in celebration of the thing that fueled so many of our passions and ambitions - theatre.

Our creative team is currently still being assembled, but here is who we have so far.

    LOTTIE DANCE - Director/Producer

This is Lottie's diretorial debut, and also her brainchild. As well as a director, Lottie is also an actor and singer, with her own YouTube channel, LottiesaurusVA. Theatre credits include Narrator (Joseph), Jenny Lind (Barnum), Mrs Lyons (Blood Brothers), Billy Bibbit (One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest) and Sister Mary Pattrick (Sister Act). She is insanely excited to be doing this production, and has put her heart, soul, blood, sweat and tears into making this a reality.

    BRADLEY COX - Choreographer

Also making his debut, Bradley, having been a dancer most of his life, says that getting the chance to choreograph is a new and exciting task for him to undertake. Also an actor, Bradley has taken part in many shows both as an actor and a skilled dancer, such as Into The Woods as Jack and very recently Barnum as General Tom Thumb.

    CINDY MARQUES - Musical Director

    Bio TBA

    LIBBY ROTHERHAM - Designer/Co-Producer

Libby doesn't really know why she's here, but is excited to be here none the less! She will be in charge of the design process for the show, as well as a co-producing along with Lottie. Libby is an artist and actor, with a large online following for her art.

We will also assembling a full band for the show, composed of 16-19 year olds, some of which will also act as an ensemble, as well as just the band.

More news about cast and crew will be posted on here as they come on board.

If funded, Spring Awakening will hopefully be performed live in Jersey, Channel Islands at TBC from the 20th July to the 21st , with 2 evening performances and a matinee performance on the 21st. (Dates TBC also subject to change)

    Timeline for the production:

    March - Fundraising Campaign.

Early April - We (hopefully) get funded and license the rights to the show.

Late April/Early May - Auditions for the production.

Late May/June/July - (Exams end and) Rehearsals begin.

    July - The Show!

We are incredibly passionate and excited about this project, but we quite literally can't do this on our own! We don't have the funds as students to put on this show without some help - your help! If we reach our goal, we can begin the project!

£500 - Paying to license the show. (If we reach £500, we can do the show!!!)

    £250 - Costume

    £250 - Set

£200 - Just In Case (If it ends up we need to pay more for something, to cover JustGiving's fees, etc)

We are lucky enough to be (hopefully) using our venue for free (TBC), so we are able to spend more money on props, costume and set, as well as other things to make our show look amazing!

The money we are raising is the minimum we need to put on the show, and really isn't much for a full length musical - it pays for the rights, and puts some money towards costumes, set and other things that make our show look and sound great. The rest will come out of our own pockets, and from begging, borrowing and borrow-stealing things for free. As long as we have the rights, and the venue, we can do the show! Even if we have to do it on a blank stage in our own clothes, we will do it!
