Hello, my name is Stacey, I’m a student nurse studying at Southampton university and I have the amazing opportunity to study and volunteer my services abroad. I am hoping to raise enough money to spend 3-5 weeks in Africa, working alongside local health professionals to provide healthcare for the local community.

I am hoping to work with a charity called AMECA, who base their work in Malawi. Typically, sub-Saharan African countries lack the medical equipment, beds, medication, staff and funding to provide adequate healthcare for their growing population. Patients routinely face severe levels of over-crowding and under-resourcing. AMECA strive, through sustainable initiatives, to address these challenges.

Hospitals in Malawi welcome students from the UK, giving us the opportunity to develop our nursing skills in areas we are unable to visit within our own healthcare system and treat unknown conditions to the UK. There’s so much to learn from every nurse from every cultural background, and I would love to grab this opportunity to learn how nurses in the developing world adapt to deal with under-resourced wards.
In England, we are extremely fortunate to have our National Health Service, and to have doctors and nurses at our finger tips; this is my chance to give a little something back, please help me to help others.
