Story
This summer I had the opportunity to go to Ethiopia to visit friends and family. It is an amazing country, full of beauty and potential which will become evident in the near future. When visiting the country, I knew that I would not leave the country before thinking of a way that I would be able to help in a cause. I have a huge passion for both my country and the continent as a whole. I've read lots African literature, music, and politics and in general I do regard myself to be proud of being from Ethiopia.
During the last week of my trip to Ethiopia we went to visit my aunt. Prior to my visit I was told that she has her own charity which she runs from home. My grandmother knew that I would be interested in this so we went to her house. We were greeted by numerous little children coming to welcome us to their house, each stopping what they were doing to come and shake our hand. It was an orphanage.
I decided immediately that I would do everything I can to make sure that I would help in some way to get involved in this cause. I had no idea before this that my aunt ran an orphanage, and being so closely related to the cause I knew it was my moral responsibility to help.
I asked one of the girls what the biggest problem in the orphanage was. She told me it was stationery. I can guarantee that the majority of you reading this would not expect this to be the largest adversity they faced. She said everything else was manageable but supply is limited and in Ethiopia the prices of just a pad of paper is expensive.
In most companies, schools and organsiations there are ample amounts of stationery lying around which no one uses and the likelihood of achieving this goal in supplying stationery for the 52 orphans is high. I know that we can do this, it is truly a worthwhile cause which I know can achieve our goal!!

8 years agoThank you for all the donations! I thought I would just give a breakdown of what the money will be able to provide: £200 provides pencils, pens, rulers, rubbers, sharpeners, notebooks and colours for all the 57 orphans. If I raise more than this I hope to also include small pencil cases in which the stationery can be kept. It is surprising how £200 is able to go such a long way and all contributions are so valuable. Thank you again for the donations as they really do have a huge impact!
