    Story

St Cadwaladr's Church in Bishton is launching an urgent appeal for donations to raise at least £50,000 for essential repairs to our 600 year old tower.

Our church is a much loved local treasure and has been at the centre of cultural life in our community for more than 1000 years. During that time thousands of local people have been christened, married and buried there - and still are today. St Cadwaladr's Church stands ready to serve future generations but the tower desperately needs urgent repairs. The church is regularly open to visitors and provides a haven of peace in our busy world.

It is the only listed building in Bishton and one of the only three churches in Wales named after King Cadwaladr. He was the last Celtic King of Britain and the originator of the Red Dragon symbol of Wales. Bishton, formerly known as 'Bishop's Town', was the site of the Bishop of Llandaff's Palace in the early Christian era. For additional history of the church follow this link

A church project group has been established to bring our community together with well supported events. We are also working with the Living Levels Project to create an exhibition of both church and local history. Richard Pain, Bishop of Monmouth, Canon Jeremy Harris and Reverend Celia Jones have endorsed our work within the community and this appeal.

Raising money for restoration is vital to keep our church open as it may otherwise become unsafe for services, events and visitors. A recent survey advised that the tower stone work is in very poor condition and needs remedial works estimated at over £50,000 to be completed within the next 18 months.

All donations will be gratefully received and will be acknowledged in our new church exhibition.

    Thank you
