    Story

Every 5 years, inspections are carried out on churches by architects appointed by the Diocese of Llandaff. In 2018, an inspection was carried out on St. Catwg's Church and it identified that, in order for the church to remain a warm, welcoming and safe place for people, priority work had to be carried out on both internal and external areas of the church.

The report identified dampness leading to loss of paintwork and plaster. The cause of many problems was found to be ineffective rainwater goods, holes in roof, slipped and broken slates and plant growth growing out of gullies which may on inspection warrant replacing. The total cost of the Project is just over £33, 000. We hope to raise money from crowdfunding on this page, applying to grant providers (e.g. Welsh Churches Act) and post-pandemic, to hold a wide range of fundraising activities In the Parish.

St. Catwg’s Church in Pentyrch (North of Cardiff) is a Grade II listed building built in 1857 and is one of the best churches designed by Prichard and Seddon on an early medieval foundation dedicated to the Celtic Saint Catwg. The parishioners of St. Catwg’s are proactive in maintaining the building as far as they can, although much of the works identified by the architect are outside the scope of laymen/women, and require a specialist builder to make good the areas that are damp and also to repair the roof and interior walls.

As part of the Diocese of Llandaff our vision is that “all may encounter and know the love of God through truth, beauty and service, living full and rich lives through faith”. As a parish church, our vision is “opening up at the heart of the community” – St. Catwg’s primary role is to provide a comfortable place where people can come to worship in a simple, joyful and inclusive Christian community. Whatever peoples’ background or what they may be feeling, however often or infrequently, we love them to join us. Regular services are held on Sundays and Wednesdays but St. Catwg’s also supports the community in so many other ways..

Prior to the pandemic, we had many activities being held in the church: Plant Catwg Kids is a Parent/Grandparent/Carer and Toddler Group is one example, where preschoolers come together to have story time, sing songs and soft play. The group provides opportunities for people to network and support each other. Bacon Buddies is a Saturday breakfast Club for Under 5s and their parents/guardians. We gather on a Saturday to allow parents who are out at work during the week to attend, to spend some time in a fun environment with their children. There are games, toys, activities, crafts and, of course action songs to finish the morning off. We hold a Knit and Natter Club for craftwork and fellowship mostly attended by elderly ladies. Wednesday mornings are key, not only for the other Eucharist service in addition to Sunday but for Café Catwg the Fellowship Group which takes place afterwards. Elderly (not only those attending the service) come from local villages and further afield to attend – the Café offers friendship, tea/coffee/cake, singsongs, quiz time and so much more. The local primary school often visit to undertake various National Curriculum based activities, historical projects, concerts & festivals and to enjoy and learn from the flora & fauna of the churchyard.

This is just a flavour of the life of St. Catwg’s Church and it is therefore important to us and the people who us the church that its fabric (both interior and exterior) is repaired as it is deteriorating and we need to make it a safe place for its people. This will ensure our thriving community activities to continue, even more necessary after the pandemic is over, for peoples’ mental wellbeing.

Any work on Listed buildings is costly, so we are hoping for as much support as we can get from our wider community and friends of the Parish. Thank you in advance for any assistance you can give in these challenging times.

I think it is important to preserve this building that brings so much comfort and support to many and for future generations.
