Weʼve raised £1,255 to A Paramedic and Cancer Researcher now diagnosed with terminal cancer. I want to be able to support my family after my death.

Funded on Saturday, 16th December 2023

    Story

Hi - my name is Steve, I am 51 years old, I was a Paramedic until diagnosed and I used to work in Medical Research for Cancer Research UK.

I will now be unable to continue working as a Paramedic, to earn a living or support my wife, my parents, my family. They will lose both me, my skills and my financial support. My family have lost all income for the last 15+ years of my working life and will not receive my state pension. My employer pension is immature and, so of low value.

    My Story...........

After resigning from the NHS in order to complete further education, I developed a breathing problem in early 2020 I struggled and pleaded to see my GP from March 2020 until November 2020 (Dr BN Kulkarni, Trinity Medical Centre, Blythe Bridge, Stoke-on-Trent). He refused to see me or refer me for 8 months despite making 20 phone calls to the surgery, having 4 telephone consultations and despite my expertise as a Paramedic and Cancer Researcher.

I also completed 3 detailed online asthma forms on the GP Surgery web site to try and highlight the seriousness of my concerns.

I attended accident and emergency in desperation, who referred me back to my GP.

I sent two e-mails to Stoke Hospital requesting help and assessment stating I had a left upper lung problem, 6 months before left upper lung cancer was diagnosed.

I only obtained a GP appointment and reluctant routine referral (NOT URGENT) after I sent a legal letter.

I have now been diagnosed with a terminal, stage 4, inoperable lung cancer. I have never smoked and have been fit and well, I am only 48 years old.

I had been pleading for referral for 8 months and this will clearly be extremely detrimental to outcome. The Cancer would likely have been curable when I began pleading for referral in March 2020.

Now all I can do is try to raise some funds to help those I love most in the World after my death. If I can raise enough I am also hoping to help fund further research on ALK+ cancer treatments at Christies via Professor Blackhall.

I will ask my family to establish this page as a Legacy Page after my death. Hopefully funds may be enough to support treatments for others.

2 years after discussing surgery for the remaining lung mass, possible surgery or ablation has been mentioned. Again will have to wait and see.

A year after radiosurgery to the brain I was able to start to drive again. However there is an area of concern on the images, high res perfusion scans were inconclusive. So more frequent scans will be needed. Hopefully it will prove to be of no concern, time will tell.

I spent my life in study and careers which aimed to improve our understanding and help people and society. I am now terminal, I have lost my ability to work as a Paramedic or earn a living. I hope to raise at least some funds to leave my family after my death.
