    Story

STITCHERS is the first play by critically acclaimed novelist Esther Freud. It tells the true story of prison reformer and founder of Fine Cell Work, Lady Anne Tree, and the group of men whose lives are irrevocably changed when they join her sewing class.

A prison visitor in the 1960’s, Lady Anne was appalled by the conditions in Britain’s jails, the despair, the loneliness, the long hours inmates were locked in their cells. Today, overcrowding and staff shortages have resulted in the highest suicide rate in Europe. Into this environment comes an unlikely glimmer of hope. Cross stitch. Back Stitch. Chain stitch. Up and down the country prisoners are stitching for their lives.

Help us to tell the incredible story of Fine Cell Work by supporting our campaign to fund the play’s production and make it possible to take it into prisons. Every contribution will take us one step closer to bringing Stitchers powerfully to the stage. Those that sponsor the production with £1,000 and up will gain an associate producer credit in the programme.

Stitchers will run at Jermyn Street Theatre from 30 May to 23rd June 2018. For tickets to our Jermyn Street run and to our post-show Q & A please go to the theatre’s website, which you can find here.

    Special performances in UK prisons.

Stitchers drew my attention to Fine Cell Work, a creative and worthwhile charity. Sharing of the best part of our humanity, proving art's enduring and essential power of healing. Look FWD to the play.
