Story
St Michael and All Angels Church Whitwell. Churchyard Sponsored scythe in aid of the fabric fund. Saturday 31st October 2020
With our quarterly planned fundraising events for 2020 cancelled and repairs to the nave roof required, our Churchwarden Tony Godwin has offered his emerging scything skills for a sponsored mow of the churchyard to the north side of the church.
Generally this area has been left to grow wild according to current biodiversity good practice but we still give it an annual haircut. As bare chested scything is not good practice (except for dramatic effect in TV drama) and it may be a bit chilly, Tony will be fully clothed (phew!). He hopes that whilst reflectively honing the blade of the scythe, the traffic passing on the A606 below will be slowed by the appearance of the ‘grim reaper’!
The cut grass will be collected in builders bags and sold to the highest bidder – collection only .

3 years agoHuge thank you for all the support. We have raised a total of £667 between this page and direct donations to the church. We finished collecting what was cut on Saturday by Sunday midday and filled 7 builders bags, which were in turn collected by our local vet, Mr William Bevan for his own cattle.

3 years agoTony started on time, at 9 am and he has scythed about a third, but at 11 we had to head back as the rain set in. We also raked and collected 3 builders bags worth of grass so far. We will be back later on in the afternoon, rain permitting - otherwise, we will carry on over the next days to ensure we complete the area and will keep you posted! 4 years agoThanks must go to so many wonderful souls for supporting Tony's scythe-athon so far - including those that have paid directly to the Church. We've a little way to go to make the target but huge thanks nonetheless ! We will be posting videos tomorrow as Tony and his scythe get stuck into this area of St Michael and All Angels. Watch this space.

You didn’t pick a great day for this! Scything during a monsoon is probably safer than using anything electrical though! Well done. X
