Story

Hello.

We are six third-year Student midwives who would like to raise funds for a local charity, Chasing Rainbows, and also for a Celebration Ball.

Chasing Rainbows ( www.chasingrainbowscharity.com ) - Provide peer support to every women who has suffered the loss of a baby no matter the gestation of their loss, or how many miscarriages they have suffered. They also campaign for advocacy for compassionate care and provide services that raise awareness and understanding of infertility.

Celebration Ball—Unlike any other degree, Midwifery pushes students to their limits. The course is designed 50% for academia and 50% for placement. Unlike any other degree, we only receive 6 weeks off a year, and the exam period is straight after holiday (so the majority revise with no rest). Placement consists of working 2362 free hours in a trust learning and undertaking a lot of the same work a qualified midwife does, we also have to pay for our parking, uniform extras such as shoes, fob watches and if we want a dress then that also. Now student uniforms are WHITE so keeping this clean is a challenge in itself. While it is a personal choice to do this course the funding available is not sustainable for living and the majority of students either quit, do the course alongside another paid role or struggle financially. The media has highlighted the lack of midwives and the retention rates are low which we have seen in our cohort, there should have been 50 qualifying in September and we will have 25.

Therefore a Celebration Ball would be amazing to acknowledge our hardships, celebrate the achievements we have made, and thank the lecturers and midwives that have made this possible.

The 2025 cohort are thankful for every single donation and we will continue a few different tasks to help achieve our goal of £1000 in which we will split 50/50 with Chasing Rainbows

Many thanks

Amy, Collette, Jodie, Millie, Ruby and Sara
