When Sarah lost her mum to dementia in 2017, she decided to set up a social enterprise to bring the benefits of interacting with miniature donkeys to anyone who might need a boost. Find out how she used JustGiving Crowdfunding to raise money for a much-needed lorry.
Hey Sarah! Can you tell us a bit about yourself?
My name is Sarah McPherson and I'm the Founder and Managing Director of Miniature Donkeys for Wellbeing. We take our gentle and friendly miniature donkeys to care homes, community groups, dementia groups or special needs groups.
Has what you're doing been well received?
Yes! The nursing staff really encourage the visits because it gets people moving and interacting with each other. When a person can't get outside we'll take the donkeys in to meet them, which is really fun.
What prompted you to start your JustGiving page?
My mum had suffered from dementia and we lost her in April. I've had these donkey for a few years and she used to love coming to see them. When she got moved to a home, I used to take the donkey's to see her and while I was there the staff would ask if they could visit other patients who weren't able to get out. So I gave it a go and that's how it all started.
What were you hoping setting up a JustGiving page would help you achieve?
We set it up because we need a lorry. We've got a very old pony trailer that's perfectly safe but has seen better days and we need our own transport that we can put all our kit in to make sure there's good travelling space for the donkeys. It's been brilliant so far!
