    Story

Our son Simon was born after an uneventful pregnancy on the 5th of February 2018. Everything went amazingly until about 90 minutes after he was born when Simon unexpectedly stopped breathing. After an extended period of CPR and three attempts at resuscitation Simon started breathing for himself again, but so much time had passed that their was serious concerns about brain damage and he started to have seizures.

Immediately after Simon's crash call, ANTS were called. ANTS- Acute Neonatal Transfer Service- is essentially an ambulance service for very sick babies, crewed by a driver, a doctor and a nurse and equipped with all the equipment you would expect to find in a Neonatal Intensive Care Unit.

ANTS arrived to transfer Simon to Norwich at an impressive speed- we had hardly been with him for any time at all in the NICU before he was being loaded up on the special incubator. We are SO lucky- ANTS only have 3 of the special incubators to transport sick babies in and are currently raising money for a fourth- if ANTS had not been able stabilise Simon and then transfer him to he could get the care he needed, his outcome could have been very different.

Simon got transferred to Norwich and Norfolk NICU unit where we would all stay for 2 weeks. It goes without saying that the care given to Simon was outstanding, but what made the 2 week stay for us, his parents, significantly easier was the care provided for us. We had accommodation provided for us within the NICU unit so that never had to be more than a few minutes from Simon's bedside, food provided, and an amazing family care team who along with the fantastic nurses constantly checked in with us to see how we were coping.

ANTS and Norwich and Norfolk NICU not only saved our sons life, but gave him the best chance at a good quality of life. We can never thank them enough, but hopefully we will be able to raise enough money that other families in similar circumstances can also have positive outcomes.
