    Story

Yankuba and Fata are the two main protagonists of the Guardian/BBC Africa Eye documentary 'Teranga', which follows both of them in Naples for two years.

Today, both of them need your help.

They are both enormously talented and ambitious.

In the Gambia, Yankuba was a biochemist student and head of the university student union. He was forced to escape from fear of being imprisoned after he was found protesting against his government, at the time the most brutal dictatorship in Africa. He was then jailed and enslaved in Libya for five months, before embarking on a rubber dingy that was shot at by Libyan coast guard and finally reaching Italian shores. In the darkness of him room in a corrupt asylum-seeker centre in the region of Naples, Yankuba continued doing math exercises, never losing of sight his objective of pursuing a higher education. Yankuba was accepted into medical school, starting in September 2021, but needs money to be able to enroll (for the fees, and to be able to survive whilst he studies as he won't be able to keep a part-time job).

Fata has been obsessed with music for as long as he can remember.  When he arrived in Naples after a gruelling journey across the desert, Libya, and the Mediterranean sea, he immediately started working towards his dreams. He sold umbrellas in the winter and swimsuits to tourists on the beach in the summer. He saved up, and bought his first DJ decks, before slowly but surely taking the Naples club scene by storm. Today, as the pandemic decimated nightlife culture and his asylum situation is increasingly precarious, making a living has become a near-impossible task.

We - the directors of Teranga - were incredibly lucky to meet Fata and Yankuba and that they trusted us to tell their stories, which we all hope shines a light on what millions of young asylum seekers all across Europe are going through.

Any help towards them achieving their dreams would be immensely appreciated.
