    Story

I am fundraising to provide Bukhari Girl's School (in Northern Syria) and its 7 supplementary centres with 1-month worth of funding ($5500) as they go through exceptionally difficult times in securing essential funds to keep the school running.

This school has been serving since 2013, but for the past 3 months it has had absolutely no funding. Despite this, the 5000 registered girls (6-15) continue to benefit from what has now become teachers’ voluntary yet relentless efforts using very limited resources. Teachers themselves are mostly widows with families to support. In addition to the standard curriculum subjects, First Aid and Nursing training are among the life skills courses delivered regularly to the children and their parents.

I am fundraising on behalf of my cousin, Afnan Halimah, who is leading the school with her colleagues.

My cousin explained that if they were to register the school so it can be funded regularly, it would entail a lot of danger, crossing borders, humiliation, interrogation and interference. The regime of the Assad dictator will simply not want to fund organisations that do not endorse it. Therefore, historically, the school has been funded by donors including staff as well as by the UNICEF on one or two occasions for a limited period of time. Sadly, one of its key donors was recently among the victims of an airstrike in Ariha, which left the school in a difficult financial position.

In a volatile and war-torn country, education is a haven for these children, who even during the most dangerous times, find themselves catching up on school work while hiding in underground shelters. Despite this, it has been noted that education receives the least amount of support from charities around the world - only 2%!

Please help us in this initiative by donating whatever amount you can give and by spreading the word far and wide.

Did you know that only 2% of international aid goes towards education! There is a huge shortage in education funding in places like Syria, where children are desperate to learn. Thank you for your support- we have reached the first milestone! Please continue sharing the page with friends and family. Peace and love Thilal & Afnan
