Story
We are participating in a Human Rights Brigades programme, an international movement of students and Panamanian attorneys providing legal education and financial resources for vulnerable families to resolve legal challenges. The programme focuses on working with women in remote, rural, and under resourced communities who would otherwise have limited or no access to legal resources. The project is entirely dependent on the contributions from volunteers to bring lawyers from Panama City to the rural communities.
Typical cases include: child custody, divorce, civil unions and domestic violence.
The long-term aim of this programme is to help develop a sustainable legal support system in the rural areas of Panama.
We will help lead a variety of educational workshops during our stay during which we will share the knowledge we have learnt about Panamanian human rights law to the community. These will include:
-Workshops in primary schools on the rights of families;
-Workshops on human rights to empower the local community;
-Workshops to develop a sustainable legal support system in the community; and
-Debate workshops (following MUN guidelines) in schools.
In order to raise money, we will be walking from one end of Loch Lomond to the other, a trek that is set to take 11 hours! We ask that you sponsor our walk to help us raise the necessary money to bring the lawyers to the rural areas. The walk is set to take place on Sunday the 14th of May. We will be posting updates of our trip to Facebook. You can sponsor the whole walk and also request and pay for challenges which we will record and upload them to Facebook for you to see.
