Story
This is my beautiful girl, Lucia May Smith at Disneyland Paris in April 2017.
In April 2016, Lucia was diagnosed with cancer, a Wilms' tumour. On 16th May 2017, my darling girl died from anaplastic Wilms' tumour.
She fought like a true warrior princess for just over a year. She was a delightful, happy little girl with a smile that lit up a room. She was radiant, graceful and touched the hearts of everyone she met. This was evident in so many ways including earlier this year when my wonderful friend Charlotte set up a just giving page to raise funds to make Lucia’s wish come true to go to Disneyland Paris.
Not only did Lucia have to contend with cancer, its gruelling effects and treatment but she was also diagnosed with Phelan McDermid syndrome (22q13 deletion) just after her 4th Birthday.
As Lucia’s mother, I spent years caring for her, especially in the last year. My son, her brother Archie was 6 when she died and had to spend his 7th Birthday without his gorgeous big sister.
Why am I raising money? To give something back, to challenge myself, to try and somehow fill a gap that will never be filled, to keep myself busy and to leave something behind in Lucia’s memory.
Money raised will be used to give a little something back to the teams, communities and charities that helped me, Lucia and Archie over the last year and that will continue to help us in the coming months and years. I will continue to update this page over the next year with details of how we are raising money and who we are giving that money to.
We have already raised close to £1500 for CLIC Sargent through the retiring collection at Lucia’s funeral in lieu of flowers.
Lucia was 9 when she died, so my thoughts are, in the next year I will complete 9 different challenges and raise at least £9,000. I invite you, my friends, to join me on any of these challenges. Every challenge done in Lucia’s memory.
So let’s get started;
Challenge Number One – Saturday 17th June! (short notice!
