    Story

For a long time, Autism, has been a condition thought to affect mainly males it is now recognised that Autism presents differently in girls and women .It is estimated that there could be between 140,000 and 240,000 women with undiagnosed Autism in the UK alone .Many females are not even able to access a diagnosis, due to the misunderstanding of the female presentation .Even worse if they do manage to get referred for an assessment, they are then being assessed with male biased diagnostic tools by clinicians who have little understanding of the different presentation of autism in females .This lack of recognition has led to many women having their difficulties completely missed or even more worrying has led to many women being misdiagnosed with mental health conditions or personality disorders, and being over prescribed medications which are not recommended for Autistic individuals.

The Autistic Women's Empowerment Project was founded in 2014 by Willow Holloway and her daughter to raise awareness of the female presentation of autism, since then it has grown organically and we now have a voluntary team who work together to raise awareness and we have developed into a peer to peer support network, During 2015 we networked with the autistic community ,developed a website, and a social media platform and Willow has attended events across Wales to advocate for autistic females and to campaign for recognition and improved services for Autistic females

Up to now we have received no funding Willow and her daughter have covered all costs including office rent so those who need support are able to meet in private, travel expenses ,printing etc . Willows eldest son was involved in a Road Traffic Accident on New Years Eve and was seriously injured and will need ongoing support and so she can no longer continue to fund this much needed work.

Please consider giving to our cause every penny will help us continue our work

Thank You in advance The AWE Project
