The Kidney Kid blog was set up by my beautiful daughter, as a way to cope with having kidney failure and to inspire others with ill-heath. Sadly, Alexx died in 2016 age only 24, due to her illness. In her memory, we her family are continuing The Kidney Kid to bring comfort and smiles to poorly kids in hospital in the Midlands.
Alexx had been in and out of hospital since she was 18 months old. And she spent a lot of time in the Leicester Royal Infirmary as well as in Nottingham. She always had to have her comfort toy with her during her hospital stays. Firstly, she had a dragon, a duck, a teddy bear and then from age 9 until age 24 she had a little doll who she called Jessica. These little toys provided so much comfort, cuddles, friendship, distraction and company.
Like Alexx, kids like to bring their own toy from home when they come to hospital. But when a health crisis happens, there isn't always time to pack, it's a matter of getting into hospital fast. Sometimes this means without their cuddly toy. Occasionally a toy may be rejected and not allowed onto the ward because of the risk of infection. And not every child has the luxury of owning a cuddly toy. Feeling frightened, alone, in pain, unwell, anxious, depressed and helpless. Away from their family, friends and pets. This is the time they need extra comfort and cuddles. And we all know the universal love and help a teddy bear brings.
How lovely then to receive a teddy or cuddly from the hospital doctor or nurse. Not only could it provide much needed comfort but help establish trust between hospital staff and the child, which is critical. It can provide much needed distraction for the child and this helps the staff to get on with their job faster. Teddy/cuddly may be used by doctors and nurses to explain an upcoming test, operation or procedure. Using teddy to demonstrate on, can help prepare and calm the child down. The teddy/cuddly may also be used to help the child to express what they can't. It's amazing how a teddy/cuddly can talk and come to life for a child.
Teddies and cuddlies are brought locally from a local business. They will be a choice of small ones to bigger ones to suit the different ages of kids. Teddies and cuddlies are super soft to provide comfort and cuddlies to the child.
Most teddies and cuddlies you buy from shops can only be sponge dry or washed in a washing machine and air dried. This is not helpful for a poorly child who needs their beloved teddy to be hygienic but also available to them at all times. So the teddies/cuddlies we buy are fully machine washable and can be dried in a tumble dryer, without any harm coming to them. This helps reduce infections and means their is a quick turnaround. so very important and the child can enjoy their teddy for years to come. And it means a poorly kid never has to be in hospital alone. So for every £10.00 donated we can buy a fully machine washable teddy. AND each teddy will have a lovely kidney kid get well message.
I know Alexx would love this! I hope you can give us further support. Thank you.
