    Story

Thorne & Moorends Colliery Monument Committee are dedicated supporters of our 'Coal-Mining Heritage'. We are working tirelessly in order to have a fitting memorial in a prominent position which will commemorate Thorne Colliery and all the men who toiled in our mines. We have gained approval of our planning application for the monument to be sited in the forecourt of the Hedgerow Centre, Marshland Road, Moorends - very poignantly it is the exact location where once stood the Miner's Welfare Club. Already on site and forming the backdrop for the monument we have a well established Miner's Memory Wall which to date holds approximately 530 personally engraved bricks bearing the names of our miners - all purchased by their families to help raise funds for the monument. The famous sculptor Graham Ibbeson has donated his services designing the monument, he will be working closely with us throughout the entire process from start to finish. To secure the first stage which involves the modelling and mould making we need to raise £21,600 - to date we are delighted to have raised approximately one third of this amount. We know the community is behind us one hundred percent and appreciate that everyone is eager to help us raise the funds for this monument, which we all agree is well overdue. Consequently this funding page is one of many ideas which we have decided upon in order to give everyone the opportunity to contribute in their own way however small. Our aim is for a memorial in which we can all take an immense pride - more so knowing that we have all been instrumental in one way or another in making this happen. Please support us by making a donation - linked to the committee's bank account. As Susan our Treasurer will tell you - it's the pennies that make the pounds.
