    Story

    (Español mas abajo)

Many travellers head to Cusco, Peru, on their way to seeing wonders like Machu Picchu and the Sacred Valley.

The city is buzzing with restaurants, nightlife, shops, and people.

In the mountainous outskirts lies the marginalised neighbourhood of Huchuy Yachaq (pronounced Who-chee Ya-chak). Life is hard, wages brutally low, and it feels like a different country to the riches below. It's the weakest there that suffer the most.

Marlenne and volunteers set up and run the Huchuy Yachaq Foundation to give the kids of Huchuy Yachaq a chance. They provide meals, education, and a safe refuge from what can be complicated and hard home lives.

The team works tirelessly to bring hope and laughter to the area's children. I've seen their work first-hand several times and it's no exaggeration to say Huchuy Yachay saves lives. The COVID pandemic has had a profound effect on the kids.

My impression of the Huchuy Yachaq Foundation community is that they never ask for sympathy, they refuse to be cowed, and they greet each day with their heads up and smile on their faces.

But attitude only gets you so far. They always need financial support, which usually comes from outside Peru and rarely from local authorities.

This cause is one where every penny is counted, because every penny counts. Just one US dollar will feed a child for a day. For USD 40, volunteers can buy everything a kid needs for studying for a year, from a backpack to pencils, books, and folders.

Anything you can give will be treasured by Marlenne and put to the best use possible. She is the selfless and tireless heartbeat that keeps the project, and the kids, going.

Me and my friend Jim are covering all our expenses on a self-supported Land's End to John O'Groats cycle ride and camping, some 1,000 miles in two weeks. It would be amazing to get a pound for every mile we cycle.

We may not complete it — we're training hard and will try our best — raising money to help Huchuy Yachaq would be the real reward.

    Many thanks,

    Tom and Jim

    Muchas gracias,

    Tom y Jim
