LLANELLI UPRISING 2018!

On 17 August, 1911, the first national rail strike in Britain started. In Llanelli, mass picketing stopped all trains from moving. Troops were sent in by Home Secretary Winston Churchill, and on 19 August they fired on the crowds, killing two and injuring others. Strikers and their supporters then besieged the soldiers in the railway station, and in a general uprising magistrates’ shops were attacked and strikers fought soldiers on the streets. Trucks of the railway company were torched, and in an ensuing explosion, four people died.
Every August in Llanelli we commemorate these dramatic events, the courage of those who offered resistance to the military, and pay tribute to those who died, laying wreaths on the graves of the shot men.

The Band Gorymdeithiol Cambria Marching Band will be with us again, and RMT Assistant General Secretary Steve Hedley will also be marching and speaking at the rally!
