    Story

    What we are for

A Community Fridge is a simple idea. So simple in fact, that there are already over 150 in the UK already! Essentially, locals and businesses can bring excess (but within use-by date) food, and we share it with those in the community that want it. This not only reduces food waste, but also helps those that might need a top up to the food shop that week.

This really is a project for everyone to take part in! You can bring food along one day, and take some the next. We have worked with many local businesses and organisations, but the support of local residents is the lifeblood of the Community Fridge.

Thanks to your generous support, we have been able to refurbish the fridge for our second birthday anniversary. See below!

    Help us to help you

The Uckfield Community Fridge opened in October 2021 and we have given out literally tons of food so far! However, we have ongoing costs such as utilities, insurance, and maintenance, as well as ambitious plans to expand our work. Please consider supporting the Fridge with a donation to keep us running into the future, so that we can continue reducing food waste and helping Uckfield residents with getting food on the dinner table.

    The nitty gritty

The Uckfield Community Fridge is formed as a Community Interest Company, with four Directors and more than 20 volunteers. The Fridge is located behind the Hub, what many people may know as the former Citizens Advice Bureau and is accessed via Luxford Fields:

The Community Fridge is located in a former shipping container, which we have fundraised to convert into the purpose-built home for the Fridge. Take a peak inside!

We also now have a freezer, allowing us to collect and store more food including meat products.

Please chip in whatever you can today to support the Uckfield Community Fridge!

We know times are really tough right now, and we took a long time deliberating about asking for money. After all, we want this to be free for Uckfield residents. However, child hunger and an explosion of demand for food banks are just the tip of the iceberg in showing that there is something gravely wrong in our society, and in Uckfield too.

Many more challenges are also mounting: from the growing environmental impact of food on our planet and rising levels of obesity, to global supply chain issues. These problems can’t be solved with a quick sticking plaster, but require people coming together with a shared understanding of the problems and identifying the best solutions.

The headlines may be national, but solutions can be found at the local level. Food partnerships are a brilliant way to bring together residents, local government, community groups, and businesses to promote good food for all. In places where they already exist, they have helped drive collective progress on many of the issues mentioned above.

Thanks for reading - we will really appreciate anything you can give to keep us open, reducing food waste and helping Uckfield residents put food on the dinner table.

We are also affiliated with Hubbub, who work to support Community Fridges across the UK in maintaining high hygiene standards.
