    Story

I plan to make over 50 classic (but nutritious) ugly vegan meals for London’s homeless community and distribute them throughout the city. I’ll pay for the ingredients and expenses from my own pocket- but anyone who wishes to make a kind gesture in the form of a small donation is welcome to - this will go to various homeless charities throughout the city of London.

In light of recent negative happenings in the vegan community I’m doing what I’m best at: fighting douchebags with kindness and realness.

For those who know a bit about me personally, I’ve been volunteering with a small homeless charity in London called the Simon Community for over two years now. Through doing this I’ve had my mind blown by people’s kindness, intelligence and have learnt so much about the greatness and strength of humans. This kindness and greatness exists in us all, and it comes hand in hand with another community I’m proud to be a part of: the vegan community. I am literally just here to promote a bit of kindness and to remind myself and whoever else who cares to listen - why we’re here: because we’re kind, because we’re smart and because we care.

Words said by a notable member of the vegan community recently really hit a bit of a nerve and I was honestly so bummed out to be reminded that there is a huge lack of education and conversation surrounding the issues of homelessness.

Unfortunately, homelessness is a huge issue. Through my volunteer work I’ve learnt that it takes NOTHING to find yourself living on the streets: the people I have met are dancers, chefs, mechanics, daughters, IT technicians, fathers, husbands, soldiers and artists. They are us: they are human, and it took one unfortunate turn to take them to their new home on the streets. This wrong turn could've been a bout of depression, of social anxiety, a breakdown of a relationship... we all know how this feels, and we're all lucky enough to have had the strength and support networks to pull us out of our own dark spots - it's easy to forget that some people don't have this.

The preconceptions about the homeless community that I, and many other people have/had are greatly incorrect - these incredible people are not lazy, they are not rejects, and they are not simply addicts (many of the people I work with are completely sober) - they read books, they watch the news, they love nature, they love Black Sabbath, they care about politics - their lives are not at all dissimilar to ours: however unlike many of us, our society chooses to neglect the shit out of them.

Anyway, I don't think I've remotely covered JUST HOW FUCKING IMPORTANT this conversation is, so I'm also offering you the chance to ask me questions whenever you want and I will always endeavour to answer them all.

Peace the fuck out, Ugly vegan / Lucie xo

I used to work for Mind in one of their mental health Crisis Cafes. A lot of the attendees were or had been homeless due to lack of support with various mental health issues. This stuff is important!
