Story
In October 2016, 20 Ukrainian children that have lost their fathers in the war, visited Scotland for a 10 day holiday. The visit was organised by the Ukrainian Children of War project - a cooperation between the Dnipro Appeal Charity, the River of Life Charity in Ukraine, the Ukrainian Consulate in Edinburgh, the Ukrainian Community Centre in Edinburgh, the Ukrainian Ministry of Social Policy, as well as volunteers from across Scotland.
The Ukrainian Children of War has since become a separate organisation dedicated to supporting children that have lost their fathers or otherwise been affected by the war, both the original 20 children that visited Scotland, and new ones. There are close to 1 million children in Ukraine that have been affected directly by the war and they often need support in terms of psychological assistance to cope with the loss, in addition to practical support in everyday life.
Our first project was to send the same group of 20 children, their siblings, and their mothers on a 5-day trip to the Carpathian mountains in June 2017. During their stay in the Carpathians they worked with professional trauma therapists to help them deal with their loss and also had a chance to interact with other families in the same situation.
We are also looking at other ways to support the children more permanently through support for language classes etc and we are very grateful for your support in making us able to help these children!
