My name is Marilyn Chaparro-Connolly, this is a pledge to help the Puerto Rican people after Hurricane Maria’s catastrophic event where 3.5 million citizens were left without power and running water.

I arrived in Puerto Rico prior to this tragic event and witnessed first hand how the Island went from lush green to being devastated of vegetation, water and electricity. I was fortunate enough to be evacuated with my sister and my elderly parents but most were not as lucky as we were.

Currently…

80% of the island’s electricity is not functioning

28% of the people lack running water

72% of the people that have running water are being warned to boil it or disinfect it before drinking it

100% of the people are in danger of getting sick from the water that they are drinking

40% of the people lack cell phone and landline reception and have no way of contacting help or their loved ones

Close to half of hospitals in the island are still without electricity

20, out of 51 sewage treatment plants are not functioning

5, out of 18 toxic-waste sites have not been inspected by the Environmental Protection Agency since the hurricane
