What am I fundraising for?
I am fundraising so that I can start a PhD researching the recovery process from Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (CFS) at Southampton University in September 2018.
The title of my project is to ‘Conduct a Thorough Investigation of the Recovery Process from CFS’. The plan is to conduct this in three stages: -
1. Conduct a systematic review of all the literature of recovery from CFS to date.
2. Conduct qualitative interviews with both those who have recovered from CFS and practitioners who help people work towards recovery from CFS. The purpose behind these is to investigate further the emergent core themes of the recovery process.
3. Conduct a Quantitative Longitudinal Study. Following the completion of the first two studies, a quantitative longitudinal study will be designed and implemented to see how generalisable the overall findings are.
I will be studying on a part time basis. The rest of the time I will be continuing to run workshops on CFS & ME and working on a 1-2-1 basis with people with CFS/ME, helping them start to work their way towards recovery.
Why am I doing this research?
Three years ago, I was diagnosed with Chronic Fatigue Syndrome. Shortly after receiving the diagnosis, my doctor told me that there was nothing she could do to help me recover and that I would simply have to learn to live with the condition. I never accepted that. I simply could and would not believe that CFS was a life sentence.
So, I personally embarked on a quest to find a way to recover – and I found one! Today I am healthier, happier and have more energy that I think I have ever had – which for someone who was practically bed bound 3 years ago is no-mean-feat!
As part of my search for a way to recover I undertook a research project investigating whether self-development plays a role in the recovery process from CFS. Follow this link if you are interested in reading this paper: https://lauramarybuchanan.co.uk/research/ .
This project brought up a lot of interesting results and several aspects which need further investigation. It also really opened my eyes to how little understanding there is of CFS and how desperately further research is needed. In particular, the need for research looking specifically at the recovery process from CFS.
As I have personally made a full recovery and I know there are thousands of other people who have too, I felt it was essential that further research into the recovery process be carried out.
I know how debilitating the condition is and want to do all I can to help gain a greater understanding of the condition so that we can then help more people fully recover.
How much do I need to raise?
As there is currently very little funding for research into CFS, I need to raise the funds required to do this research myself.
I need to raise a total of £2,500 to cover the tuition for the first year of the PhD.
Thank you very very much for any donations you can make. I really do appreciate your support – without which I cannot carry out this much needed research.
