Our school is the only one in the village of Utende on Mafia Island, Tanzania and many of our students travel over an hour to learn here each day. Heavy rains have recently damaged the toilet block at our school. The children cannot use it as there is danger that the building could collapse and as waste has begun to overflow, they may be exposed to diseases. Many students do not live in the village, so going home to relieve themselves is not an option. Some members of the local community have kindly offered to open their homes to the children so they can use the toilet, but this is not a permanent solution. Teachers are concerned about the impact this is having on the students well-being and education. The parents of the school have offered to provide free labour, but we still need to raise money for the materials, plumbing and salaries of tradesmen. Due to the isolated location of Utende, all the materials have to be bought from the other side of the island and transport is not cheap. The goal is to build a brand new, high quality block with 12 toilets and have separate toilets for boys and girls. With your help we can build toilets that will last 15-20 years and create an environment where our students can learn without distraction. Here on Mafia Island, education is very important to the children and they believe that it is vital to their future. Most people here are fishermen, shop owners or work in tourism so they hope that education can provide individuals with the opportunity to develop new income streams.
