    Story

I am planning to start a machining business with the eventual aim to produce biomedical devices. To begin with, I will be producing every day carry items and performing bespoke job shop work for individuals and companies.

Early in my business's life I would like to work with local schools and colleges to provide business experiences and provide an apprenticeship program, which I would hope to improve to take on more apprentices and hopefully create work experience years with universities.

I have spent a large proportion of my life in education trying to perfect my knowledge of material science, specialising in biomaterials and material processes only to be told having finished my PhD that I didn't have the industrial experience or I was over qualified for the role.

I made a decision that in order to get where I needed I would have to make my own opportunities, and once I have I would try my hardest to provide the inroads needed for others that find themselves in my position. In addition, I knew my knowledge would lend itself to a business of this type with goals of entering the biomedical and tissue engineering market and becoming a mentor for others.

For several years I have worked as a laboratory technician teaching laboratory classes and training other technicians in the duties required. I have also spoke at conferences and forums and have the passion for innovating, problem-solving and inspiring those around me.

The money I make here will be used to supplement the money I have to put into the business in order to get a business loan. This loan would be used to rent a location and purchase the machinery and tooling I need to start the business.

British machining deserves a chance to come back into the light, and young people deserve a chance to develop skills outside of the education system. This isn't just a passion of mine it is something that can help people both directly and through the biomedical products we will eventually produce.
