    Story

"If in the years to come, you meet a man who says, “I was at Arnhem”, raise your hat and buy him a drink” Alan Wood, War Correspondent.

In September 1944 over 1,300 Glider Pilots took part in Operation Market Garden and the subsequent Battle of Arnhem. The operation was to go disastrously wrong, with all elements of the British Airborne at Arnhem suffering particularly heavy casualties. Out of the Glider Pilot Regiment alone, almost 230 men were killed and over 500 were taken as prisoners of war.

Every year these events are commemorated in the Netherlands. This year, on the 73rd anniversary of the battle, we are aiming to bring a group of Glider Pilot Veterans back there for these commemorations.

For some age may prevent them from returning ever again and this may be the last opportunity for them to salute their fallen friends from the Regiment. We are raising funds from official sources but will need additional funding to cover the balance.

You may not have the chance to buy these veterans a drink as Alan Wood suggested, but for the price of one you can help us get them there.
