Weʼve raised £10,000 to Raise funds for the Speedway Riders Benevolent Fund

Funded on Friday, 30th September 2022

Don't have time to donate right now?

    Story

Speedway has enabled me as a rider, mechanic and fan to travel across Britain, Europe and Australia. Meet many people, supporters, mechanics and riders from all over the world making many friends and creating so many great memories.

On the 4th of August 2022 I leave Foxhall Stadium, the home of the Ipswich Witches Speedway Team and walk the 264 miles (averaging just under 30 miles a day) to The Principality Stadium in Cardiff where the British round of the World Speedway Championship Grand Prix series will be held on Saturday the 13th, aiming to arrive in Cardiff the day before.

My hope is to raise as much as we can for this good cause to support riders and their families when they need it most.

Speedway is an exiting and dangerous sport. The riders involved put everything on the line each time they go out to ride and it is great that the charity is there to support them when the worst happens.

The Fund was registered as a Charity for the purpose of assisting British Speedway Racers, their dependants and family, following serious or life-changing Speedway related accidents.

Over the years the Fund, which is now regulated by The Charity Commission, has evolved and its main purpose is to benefit former Speedway Riders, Current Speedway Riders, and their families, following serious or life changing injuries whilst racing for a British Speedway Club or representing Great Britain at International Level Speedway.

The Fund can assist in many ways for example necessary home adaptations to allow wheel-chair access etc., Medical Equipment, Specialist Care, Financial Support and the General Welfare and Wellbeing of those who have suffered life changing injuries, as deemed fit and proper in deserving cases.

Great Britain is the only Speedway Nation in the World to have a specific charity to assist its injured Racers.

The Speedway Riders' Benevolent Fund is a registered charity, number 208733.

None of the Ben Fund helpers or Trustees receive any financial remuneration for their input, all are unpaid volunteers.

The main source of income for the Fund is the annual "Benfund Bonanza" Meeting, bucket collections held at tracks, individual Fund Raising Events, donations and bequests.

The average annual expenditure for assistance provided is currently around £100,000.

The full amount donated to this page will go straight to the charity and if any business' would like to get involved and help towards the cost of the walk please contact me directly at walktocardiff2022@gmail.com. Any excess money from sponsorship will also go to the charity.

I will publish regular updates regarding support and my training as well as when the walk itself takes place.

In advance I want to personally thank you for your support, whatever that may be and even if you are unable to donate, please leave a message of support or share the link.

    Many Thanks

    John.

Made it to the finish line and on time. Huge thanks to Ryan Sullivan for volunteering to be my flag man and for Speedway GP to let me end my walk with a lap of the track. Thank you so much for donating and breaking the target. It is so much appreciated. Still time to donate, if you can. An amazing (and hard) adventure for me and so overwhelmed by your generosity.

Back home from Poland yesterday and time to call in and see Mark Loram at Hemingstone Garage. Huge thank you to Mark for helping towards the cost of the walk so that all donations will go to the BEN Fund. Without the help of Hemingstone Garage and others, I would have really struggled to fund the walk myself and I'll be wearing the Hemingstone Garage logo with pride during the walk. Not only has Mark allowed me to share some awesome experiences with him over the years but to support me in this way is truly fantastic and can't thank him enough.
