Story
The Watson Cup commenced in 2018 when the East Lothian Junior Golf League took a group of young golfers to Kiawah Island in South Carolina to compete in the inaugural Match. Tom Watson watched all the Players on the final day and presented the trophy in his name. The Team comprised only male players then, but there is nothing to stop our best Girls to be included in future matches. This was a life-changing experience for the players, giving many of them their first taste of golf in the USA, and several of them are now on Golf Scholarships there, or are Professionals, or are competing in top class Amateur events at home. It was planned to have the Match biennially but Covid intervened. The second Match, which now includes Juniors from the Edinburgh League, is being held in July 2022 in East Lothian and Edinburgh, over three venues, Royal Burgess, Muirfield and Gullane. Donations from local Golf Clubs and from other Donors have ensured that we can give the South Carolina group of 9 Players, and the members of their families, some superb hospitality. Bernard Gallacher is our President and will present the trophy in 2022. The historical link between the two areas is strong - the earliest evidence of Golf in the USA is an entry in a daybook of a merchant in Edinburgh who shipped golf clubs and balls to Charleston in 1739. Now we have to start raising funds for the next trip to South Carolina in October 2024, so any donations would be gratefully received. All funds will only be used to subsidise the Players' airfares, ground travel, accommodation, meals, green fees etc. In addition they will visit and experience golf at the world famous golf resort at Pinehurst. Lets give these youngsters a "Trip of a lifetime!" Please start donating.
